Photographing the Marcus Whitman Hotel felt cinematic—rich texture, moody light, and modern heritage in every frame.
Marcus Whitman Hotel
The newly reimagined interiors of the historic Marcus Whitman Hotel in Walla Walla are nothing short of cinematic. Rich textures, jewel-toned palettes, and moody, layered lighting offer a fresh sense of modern heritage—bridging the hotel’s legacy with a distinctly current design perspective. Capturing this transformation through the lens felt like stepping into a curated storybook of color, contrast, and character.
From the soft sheen of velvet drapes to the quiet glow of mid-century lamps, every design choice in the Marcus Whitman’s updated spaces evokes intimacy and intention. As a photographer drawn to light and form, I was especially struck by the interplay of textures—plush upholstery, carved woodwork, polished marble, and the gleam of vintage glassware all created depth within each frame. These elements invited a slower, more observant approach to shooting—one where subtle shifts in shadow or reflection added to the atmosphere of each image.
Photographing interiors like this is about more than documenting design—it’s about capturing mood. In the hotel’s lounge spaces and parlor rooms, natural light filtered gently through velvet-trimmed windows, casting a soft wash over the architectural details. I focused on framing that preserved the immersive feel of the rooms, letting the light lead while highlighting thoughtful vignettes—like a single wine glass on a side table, or a reflection caught in the arch of a brass-fringed mirror.
What makes this project particularly memorable is how it honors place. Walla Walla’s deep roots in wine, hospitality, and design culture feel fully expressed here. The hotel’s spaces don’t just serve a purpose—they tell a story of gathering, refinement, and experience. Photographing them was a chance to showcase not just style, but atmosphere.
Projects like this one align perfectly with the work I love to create: grounded in design, elevated in tone, and crafted to let space speak for itself. The Marcus Whitman Hotel is a perfect example of how timeless interiors and thoughtful styling can create a story that resonates far beyond the frame.
